Supporting Horror Writers Through Sustainable Leadership

Writing communities thrive when creativity is supported by structure. For nonprofit organizations, sustainability isn’t just about inspiration. To have a sustainable nonprofit, you must build an operational foundation that fosters growth and connection over the long term.

In my role as Treasurer of the Utah Horror Writers Association (UHWA), I focus on the behind‑the‑scenes work that allows our organization to do exactly that: empower horror writers at every stage of their careers.

Building a Strong Financial Foundation

UHWA exists to support writers working in horror and speculative fiction through events, education, and community. To make that possible, the organization needs clear, responsible financial systems that ensure resources are used effectively and equitably.

As Treasurer, I manage the essential financial logistics that keep UHWA running smoothly. This includes overseeing budgets, tracking expenses, and maintaining accurate financial records. One of my primary goals has been to streamline financial reporting and expense management, making it easier for board members to understand where funds are going and how decisions impact the organization’s long‑term health.

Transparency builds trust and it’s a cornerstone of any sustainable creative organization.

Supporting Long‑Term Organizational Health

Creative communities often operate on tight margins, which makes thoughtful financial planning especially important. Rather than focusing solely on short‑term needs, my work emphasizes long‑term organizational stability.

By improving reporting processes and clarifying financial workflows, we’ve been able to make more informed decisions about programming, events, and member support. This foundation allows UHWA to remain flexible while still planning responsibly for the future.

Strong financial systems may not be the most visible part of an organization, but they create the conditions that allow creativity to flourish.

Empowering Members Through Structure

When an organization’s operations are clear and sustainable, its members benefit directly. For UHWA, that means having the capacity to support workshops, readings, conferences, and opportunities that help writers grow their craft and careers.

My role as Treasurer supports this mission by ensuring that resources are aligned with member needs. Whether that’s budgeting for events, managing dues responsibly, or ensuring compliance and accountability, the goal is always the same: to remove barriers so writers can focus on writing.

Genre Growth Beyond the Page

Horror as a genre has always thrived in community. Online communities, writing retreats, and peer reviews are a few ways we can accomplish this. Organizations like UHWA play a vital role in nurturing that ecosystem, especially at the local and regional level.

By contributing my skills in financial management and organizational leadership, I’m able to support genre growth in a way that complements the creative work happening within the association. It’s a reminder that growth doesn’t only happen on the page, it also happens through the systems that support artists behind the scenes.

Why This Work Matters to Me

As a marketing and creative professional, I believe strongly in the power of structure to amplify creativity. Serving as Treasurer allows me to combine strategic thinking with community service, supporting writers whose work pushes boundaries and explores the darker edges of storytelling.

Genre communities deserve the same care, clarity, and professionalism as any other creative industry. I’m proud to contribute to UHWA’s continued growth and to help build a stable foundation that supports horror writers now and into the future.
